"DD9" stands for "Double Disappearing Nine-patch."
I enjoy the process of combining order with improvisation. This pattern is deceptively simple, but I chose to make it appear more complex by placing my colors randomly within the pattern. Typically, light and dark squares alternate throughout a nine-patch block, like a checkerboard. By following the pattern's construction, but changing the color placement, I created a quilt without any repetitions. It's impossible to tell where one block ends and the next begins.
I had no specific result in mind when I made this quilt. I simply underwent the process to see how it would turn out. The completed quilt looks to me like a pixelated map, which pleases me.
A quilting blog called A Few Scraps has a very easy-to-follow explanation of how a double disappearing nine-patch is constructed.
