SKETCHES AND PROCESS
Below are sketches and process materials from selected works in my postgraduate application PORTFOLIO.
Also included are works in progress and ideas for future projects.

Dolls
My dolls evolved from the original concept drawing of the three figures (below) made in an art therapy session.
I purchased a rag doll pattern to learn the basic construction and altered it to fit my design.
The characters changed and developed throughout the process.

"One Thousand Cuts"
The sketches below gave rise to a large series of works in this vein.
Also shown are construction notes and photos of the fabric strips laid out and partially sewn together.

"Revision"
At left is the original quilt (which I was not happy with) shown partially quilted.
The second image shows my idea to cut the quilt into squares, selectively cropping out interesting mini-compositions, which I then reassembled into a grid. When a piece does not feel precious, it's easier to take drastic measures to take it where it needs to go.
The destruction of the quilt was satisfying and created a much stronger piece as a result.
This piece was juried into an international exhibition of modern quilts where it was purchased by a collector.

WORKS IN PROGRESS
Star Quilt
This quilt is entirely hand-sewn with a needle and thread. It's a slow, sometimes meditative process that will take several months to complete.
Hand-sewing hearkens back to great-grandmothers who had no other means of sewing, and managed to make clothes and quilts to keep their families warm, often using only found materials. I find comfort in this quiet work and in the connection to my quilt-making ancestors.
I made all the stars first, then mocked up a layout composition digitally. The 108 stars will be arranged in an asymmetrical value gradation.
Below are details of the front and back of a star, showing the precise stitching and the extra star formed by seam allowances when joined.

Beast
This wolf-beast evokes the shadow parts of self which beg to be embraced. He is ugly but surprisingly soft and pleasant to hold.
I've never worked with shaggy synthetic fur and it's very difficult, requiring compromise and adaptation at each step.

Queen Quilt
An idea for a series of quilts with imagery of card-face queens representing various feminine archetypes: mother, angel, witch, temptress.
Simplified, graphic shapes and a profusion of pattern, like typical playing cards, will be accented with symbols identifying of each figure.
This concept is still fresh and needs more sketches and samples.
